When parishioners from St. James’ Episcopal Church founded Welcome Table, Inc., it was important to them to honor the church’s identity as a center for racial reconciliation. St. James’ Episcopal Church is a unique congregation of multi-cultural families, which began in 1941 as a black church when African Americans were not allowed to attend the white churches in Austin. Over the years it evolved into a place where anyone from any race, color, or creed can come to worship.
The Race Talk Project is Welcome Table, Inc.’s. tribute to the legacy of the church. This project is dedicated to holding courageous conversations in the community about race issues that affect us today. The project schedules seminars, workshops, and speeches to further racial reconciliation. These meetings include national speakers, local leaders, and community groups who are dedicated to undoing racism in our community.
